David Retter

Gaylord, MI, United States

My name is David Retter. I grew up in the greater Grand Rapids, Michigan area. I identify myself as a father, husband and provider, in that order. I have had a lifetime of the standard ’40 hours and all of the overtime I can get’. At 55 years of age, with encouragement from my lovely bride, Tamara, and from my brother, Mark, I changed my path and am pursuing a life in the arts. I dabble in music production on the computer, indulging the child in me that wants to be a rock star. I build furniture of my own design that is somewhat similar to Shaker furniture. I fish as much as I can….and THAT is art! I write, I joke, I love. My favorite vehicle for expression is wood. Sometimes I have an idea to convey and I’ll carve a scene to express the message. Sometimes I’ll see something in a piece of cast off wood, maybe something in my firewood pile or something in a downed tree that is just laying there decaying. In that case, the message isn’t mine, but is waiting to be found and brought to light in the form of a bowl or basket. I’m guiding the chisels in carving a scene. The wood is guiding me when finding a bowl. The one is very structured and there is process. The other is just very free form with no set boundaries. I love both. I'm presently developing a concept for the next Art Prize that will be a larger sculpture in wood and maybe with motion, an idea to convey but still looking for that perfect expression. My work can be seen at www.youngmelvin.com/ and https://www.facebook.com/YoungMelvin-1210193495726390/, and if you happen to be in Gaylord, Michigan, you can see my work and that of other local artists at The Holistic Spa, 104 W.Main St.
