Stare
2012 ArtPrize EntryWhen viewing a portrait we tend to search out the eyes. What can we really discover about the subject from their eyes? What can be discovered about the subject when the view is restricted to just the eyes? My daughter’s first response while looking at the concept sketch was, “It’s kind of creepy, but I want to stare at it”. In 2009 I entered portrait of Bono titled “One World” to celebrate, and call attention to Bono’s One campaign. The focal point and conversation centered on the eyes, so much so that the Grand Rapids Press featured a story displaying a picture of just the eyes simply titled “Whose eyes are these”. For Artprize 2012 I am attempting to take that conversation to a higher level with “Stare”.
