Chasing Ice

2013 ArtPrize Entry
Add to Collection

The piece Chasing Ice is a large cut paper installation. When installed, there will be rock salt on the floor (not pictured) and lava rocks to mirror the negative space of the paper installation. The installation can also be scaled up or down to fit into site specific areas. The glacial retreat of Iceland’s largest glacier, Vatnajökull is something I have been exploring in the past year. Chasing Ice is from a series of pieces based on the lagoon and its ever-changing state. This particular glacier has been retreating since 1920, with clear visual evidence from the base of the glacier to across the glacial lagoon to the ocean. The lagoon is constantly shifting, with icebergs flipping to balance themselves and pieces breaking from other pieces. When the iceberg calves, there is a brilliant teal blue that marks the fresh break before turning white again. Sometimes beauty has a cost, and within it lays extreme sadness to what we really are witnessing. (last image is 1/5 scale)
