Binary Strip
2012 ArtPrize EntryCrafted out of lightweight and durable materials, BINARY STRIP is a kinetic sculpture that utilizes the power of the wind to intrigue and entice passersby. Elevated high above the viewer’s head, the gentle fluttering and occasional, more wild spinning of the aluminum panels catches the eye of and inspires a moment of wonder in those who discover it. Placing the BINARY STRIP deep within the Lillian Anderson Arboretum, I encourage this sense of discovery, and brief instant when your brain is flooded with questions. What is it? How did it get here? What is it made of? Why is it here? ... ... While some of these questions do, in fact, have concrete answers, I will answer none. BINARY STRIP will be something different for everyone who discovers it, it will reference diverse ideas, from fantasy to biology to computer science, and it will have a wide variety of interpretations. The purpose of the BINARY STRIP is simply to instigate these questions and provoke thought in its discoverers.
