Bird Friends Series
2012 ArtPrize EntryThrough The Bird Friends Series, I wanted to celebrate the many familiar birds around our home. Our neighborhood is heavily populated with energetic robins, and one day, I spotted this robin sitting atop the eave above our bedroom, calmly watching. Something about its confident stance was reassuring and inspiring. Later this spring, when a weary robin's newly-hatched nest was raided in our yard, I felt compelled to pay tribute to this wonderfully ordinary creature through Watchbird. When I hear an owl, I immediately pause and listen. That sound resonates within me. In that quiet dark that greets nocturnal creatures, I find myself most creative and energized. My relationship with the deep night hours took on new purpose after the birth of my daughter when I frequently found myself wondering who else was stirring. My daughter's earliest vocalizations were earnest "hoo"s that warmed my soul, inspiring me to create Night Owl.
