I am an Associate Professor at Hope College. I am a member of both the Computer Science and Mathematics departments. I have two degrees in mathematics and two degrees in computer science. My research interests have always been in topics at the intersection of computer science and mathematics. In particular, I have always enjoyed combinatorics (the study of finite discrete structures) and writing programs to solve combinatorial problems. I have also always enjoyed playing with Lego. I decided to combine these interests to create art. There is much beauty in combinatorial objects and I am in the midst of a journey exploring the representation of some of these objects using Lego bricks. It is an interesting medium in which to work since there is a limited selection of shapes, sizes, and colors to work with. In fact, one of the most challenging aspects of working on this project has been obtaining the required materials.
