Los Angeles, CA, United States

My artwork is inspired by the marginalized and dispossessed of our society. For the last fifteen years I have developed a body of work focused on encounters with the homeless population of Los Angeles, where I live and work. Troubled by witnessing the living conditions of the homeless I had to work through my experiences and mixed emotions, the natural way for me to do that was to confront it with art. My work is created out of active social interaction with the people that I paint, and always with their consent and participation. I also created a series of large and small-scale ceramic sculptures between 2009 and 2013 to further address the complex issues that bear on the homeless. This sculptural work is strategically positioned on the streets to confront the public and affirm the invisible. My work has been included in numerous solo and group exhibitions, and has been generously supported by USA Projects, the Puffin Foundation, LTD., and the California Community Foundation, all of which have been instrumental in the development of my work. I received my BFA from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (1998), and MFA from the University of Southern California’s Roski School of Fine Art (2001).
