2013 ArtPrize Entry

My piece for ArtPrize 2013 is the largest and most ambitious in a series of reductive sculptures I've been creating. I work with existing objects, in this case a found wooden shed, and reduce them through a labor-intensive process of grinding them down, leaving parts untouched and parts in a fragile, thinned down state. The work speaks to physical and spiritual transformation, fragility, strength and vulnerability. During the 19 days of ArtPrize I'll be extending the work by placing 46 relics of the structure throughout Grand Rapids in obvious and not so obvious places. These relic pieces are the wooden shingles of "Shed" that were removed during it's creation. There is an image of one of the relics in the image gallery for your reference. If you happen to find one in your wanderings throughout ArtPrize please keep it, it is your piece of the work to take home. Feel free to stop by the piece and let me know you found one, I'd be happy to sign it for you.
