I didn't come to art until later in my career, starting as a high school English teacher who may have been the country's only play director/football coach. Photography has always played an important role in my life, and eventually I decided to let it take over. I earned an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2003 and have made a home for myself in Hamtramck, Michigan. I teach photography at three colleges, direct the Cranbrook Summer Art Institute, an art program for teenagers, and founded a non-profit artist collective called Hatch, where we converted a former police station into an art center. My artwork has shown in several dozen venues and as far away as China.
