Charlie Michaels is a studio and community artist living in Southeast Michigan. His work focuses on relationships between people, nature, and urban environments through temporary exhibitions, ephemeral installations, works on paper, and community-engaged projects. He has worked collaboratively on public projects with youth in Detroit and Vermont, and internationally with communities in Accra and Kumasi, Ghana and the political printmaking collective Taring Padi in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Charlie's projects have been exhibited internationally at Apex Art & First Street Gallery in NYC, Work Detroit Gallery, The Prairie Center of the Arts, Detroit Design Festival, The Soap Factory in Minneapolis, Project Gallery in Toronto, and the KNUST Museum in Kumasi, Ghana. He is a 2017 NEA grant recipient for "Between the Earth and Sky" an intergenerational community arts project engaging youth and older adults with memory loss. Charlie is Assistant Director of the Center for Socially Engaged Design at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor where he has also taught courses that bring students into Detroit schools to collaborate on art & design projects with youth and into correctional facilities to facilitate art workshops with incarcerated adults and teens. He is co-curator of the Prison Creative Arts Project’s Annual Exhibition of Art by Michigan Prisoners, one of the largest exhibitions of art by incarcerated individuals in the world. Charlie has been a Creative Community Fellow of National Arts Strategies and Center for Social Impact Strategies at University of Pennsylvania and was the 2015 NEA Social Practice School Arts Residency Fellow at the Vermont Studio Center. He has also been artist-in-residence at The Ragdale Foundation in Lake Forest, IL and Cross Cultural Collaborative in Nungua, Ghana. Charlie holds an Interdisciplinary MFA from the University of Michigan's Stamps School of Art & Design and a BFA in photography and drawing from Bradley University.
