I have been interested in art for a long time and dabbled in various art projects over the years. I first realized that I was attracted to it and that I was good at it, in college when I took a drawing class for fun. The teacher and her professor friend from Notre Dame were compiling my portfolio for, what they thought was my next step at Western Michigan University. They were absolutely sure that I was going to be an art major in college and didn’t know I already had several classes towards a different course of study there. As I continued in college I graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics and Retail Management and worked in that field for 7 years. I then settled down with my husband Gary and started our family. At that time I started a stay at home Mary Kay cosmetic business in order to have the flexibility I needed to raise my family. By being in the beauty business I have been involved in a form of art in helping women look beautiful and feel good about themselves. I also was a Director for 17 years in this business which involved training consultants in the business. I always knew that one day I would get more involved in art when the time allotted me. In 2002 I began taking art classes, first with Cindy Ford at Kendall College, then David Davis, who was an encouraging influence on myself and many of us budding artists. Art in my life now has been a fulfilling time. I totally enjoy the process of creating something, whether it be watercolor, acrylic, or oil mediums. It is exciting and very rewarding and requires trusting one’s intuition, a looking to God, and down right courage to just put something on paper. It brings a joy, happiness, and a balance to me that I hope inspires others as well. This interest has also evolved into opportunities to teach art. I currently hold classes at My Sweet Peony in Cascade, Great Legs Winery & Brewery in Holland, Art Armory In Grand Haven, Studio 2 in Montague and Sweet Seasons Bakery in Lowell. Teaching is fun and fulfilling for me as I am able to encourage and guide others as well as continuing to learn and experiment with my own art.
