Harriet and Louis
2012 ArtPrize EntryAs a sculptor I create people in everyday situations, in the simple narratives of their lives. Life size and larger these people have a quirky sensibility that makes them easy to relate to, for their raw and honest humanity. Appearing individually and in couples, their polychrome textured surfaces give them a lively vibrant energy. Their compelling frontal stance is reminiscent of the Ancient Asiatic Sculpture that has influenced them. Their weight and bulk anchor them doggedly to the earth, suggesting a permanent presence in a vain attempt to overcome the inevitable. It seems that everyone is walking a dog or two. Louis is in fact a family dog. A smug, adorable French Bull dog that was crazy confused when he first saw his wooden look alike; he sniffed, he circles, he run wildly around it; and we laughed. Common themes such as this one permeate my work, as I try to make the intangible tangible and see people in their authentic moments.
