My artwork begins with visual experimentation and exploration. First I lay a patterned cloth on the floor, then place man-made and natural objects on top of it to create a dynamic still life. I may overlay a pattern of light and dark by slightly opening the blinds on a nearby window. I add and omit objects and other patterned fabrics until the tableau feels right. I also wander through indoor and outdoor gardens taking photos; trying to capture the interplay between voluptuous flowers and densely packed leaves and stems. These two activities give me the basis for my watercolor paintings. Seemingly disparate elements fuse into a delicate balance of light, pattern, and color. The interplay continues with the actual painting. Some objects I paint so they appear to float above others; some I will alter until they become almost abstract, some patterns I blend into others. The resulting painting is one I hope depicts the moments of beauty, grace and stillness I see within our frenetic world.
