I am Brenda Farris (B.S. Farris) sculptor from Portage Indiana. No one thought I would ever go to college. Growing up with severe dyslexia, a learning disability and physical disabilities of the legs, I was told by a teacher that I would not amount to anything more than a hamburger flipper. This grim outlook provoked me to work very hard and to excel to prove her wrong. In 2011, I got my Master of Art degree from Governors State University. Now I am an art teacher for South Shore Art Center in Munster and Hammond in northwest Indiana. I do Art as an outlet for my energy, and therapy to keep me sane. My new work is somewhat out of the box it is series is 90% recycled materials made into abstract bugs. The show is called (U BUG ME!) which has two meanings, 1 it is bugs that I have made, and 2 it is a critique on our disposable society. In our society that buys a things from China and throws it out after 2 weeks because it looks cheap or fell apart, but we still buy them! I am finding most of my supplies from second hand store and stuff people just give me. However I just started with stuff I was given and it just bugged out from there. How I start building the bugs is by looking at bug pictures. Then I go to my stockpile of metal and plastic things, and try to get the piece to match the bug shape. I will start wrapping the bug with wire into the shape I desire (most of the bug are held together with only wire). B.S. Farris
