ArtPrize is a radically open international art competition and 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
For 19 days, three square miles of downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan, become an open playing field where anyone can find a voice in the conversation about what is art and why it matters. Art from around the world pops up in every inch of downtown, and it’s all free and open to the public.
It’s unorthodox, highly disruptive, and undeniably intriguing to the art world and the public alike.
ArtPrize 2015 will take place September 23 to October 11.
What Makes Us Unique?
- Open Call for Artists and Venues : Anyone over the age of 18 can be an artist and any space within the ArtPrize district can be a venue. Anyone can participate.
- Independently Organized : The entire ArtPrize exhibition is independently organized by venues and artists who connect through artprize.org.
- Public Vote and Juried Awards: Two grand prizes worth $400,000 and eight category awards worth $160,000. Half decided by public vote, and half decided by a jury of art experts.
The ArtPrize award structure features two parallel tracks of Public Vote and Juried Awards with equal prize amounts. Inviting the public to decide the winners circle has been what makes ArtPrize unique, unorthodox, sometimes infuriating but undeniably intriguing in the contemporary art world. The Juried Awards draw attention to and elevate the Public Vote, exploring the unresolvable tension and stark contrast between public and expert approaches to assessing works of art. This intellectual and aesthetic conflict is ArtPrize’s strength, energizing the production and discussion of art in a way that other art competitions do not.

The jury also awards a fifth $20,000 category award to an ArtPrize Venue for outstanding curation. Note that if an Artist wins both a Category Award and a Grand Prize, they will be awarded the greater of the two.
