GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., June 5, 2014 – ArtPrize, the radically open international art competition today announced that at the close of Artist Registration, more than 2300 artists from 65 countries and 46 states have registered in the hopes of competing for the $560,000 in prizes to be awarded at ArtPrize 2014.

“New programming like the Artist Seed Grants and the new parallel award structure have been effective in attracting renowned international artists,” said Kevin Buist, ArtPrize Director of Exhibitions. “While we’re happy to see the total number of entries grow, we’re more excited to see a diverse palette of artists—from those in the beginnings of their practice to established artists at the highest levels their field—enter ArtPrize 2014.”

Registration ended at 5:00 p.m. today for the sixth annual open call to artists. ArtPrize invited anyone over the age of 18, working in any medium, from anyplace in the world to sign up to compete. Artists registered as individuals or as collaborative teams, entering their work to into one of four categories—2-D, 3-D, Time-Based, or Installation—forming parallel tracks for public vote and juried awards.

Registered Artists must still connect with a Venue to participate in the 2014 ArtPrize event. Venue registration closed on April 10, and with more than 194 potential Venues to work with, more than 600 Artists have already connected their entries. The Connections period continues until 5:00 p.m. EDT on June 19, allowing unmatched Artists two weeks to secure a spot in the 2014 ArtPrize competition.

New for 2014, 214 registered Artists submitted applications to win one of 25 Artist Seed Grants sponsored by the Frey Foundation. Valued at $2,000 each, these awards are intended to help fund ambitious and challenging ArtPrize entries, boosting Artists who demonstrate both financial need and artistic merit. A panel of art critics and experts will review the applications to select the winners. The winning Artists must connect with a Venue before the June 19 Connections deadline to secure their entry and grant funding for the 2014 ArtPrize competition. The winners will be announced on June 20 along with the final numbers of connected Artists and Venues for ArtPrize 2014.

ArtPrize 2014 will run from September 24 to October 12. Artists who successfully connect with a Venue will compete for a combination of public vote and juried awards. The final number of participating artists will not be known until the end of Connections at 5:00 p.m. EDT on June 19.
