In the Shade of Your Shadow
The houses depicted in this painting are all real, and are all located around the Wealthy Street area of Grand Rapids. When I first came to this city, I found myself instantly attracted to that area. The architectural style and color palette of the houses resonated with me the most: this was the atmosphere of an artists' quarter, a place not found in many cities any longer. It seemed to not only be a home for the established artists Grand Rapids draws in, (or so I found, once I was more entrenched in the art scene here) but a place for the up-and-coming, a place for the voices of the young artists to be heard. The poetry (all original work of my own) hand written over the background of the painting, is meant to represent these voices, the way they seem to fill the neighborhood, and lend a sense of continuity to the lives, far flung and far reaching, that have ultimately come to reside in that eclectic quarter of this delphic city.
