Laura Milkins

Artist bio

Laura Milkins is an internationally recognized multimedia, performance artist. Her work focuses on community and social interactions, and the role that technology plays in both. In 2009 she completed a Fulbright scholarship in Mexico City for her performance "Walking Stories: Mexico", crossing Mexico City in the company of strangers and their stories. She received an MFA from University of Arizona(2008), a Post Baccalaureate at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston(2000) and a BA at Kalamazoo College(1993). She has taught art classes at University of Arizona, Kendall College of Art and Brookline Arts Center, Boston. She has performed internationally, participated in Pocha Nostra workshops and performances with Guillermo Gomez Pena, and organized art shows and festivals since 1992. She is a founding member of Arizona Between Nosotros, ARTXIII, Plugged Art Collective, WeAreTheWeather, KaffeeKlatsch Art Salon, Freezone Gallery and Kalamazoo College Visual Arts Council.

Description of work: Starting May 1st, Laura Milkins is walking home: 2000 miles from Tucson to her mother’s home in Grand Rapids. She plans to walk the entire distance, inviting people to walk with her and share a story. She will arrive during ArtPrize. The project will be broadcast live 24hrs/day on http://walkinghomestories.com where anyone can watch in real time. There will also be online, edited “TV episodes” posted weekly. Laura will wear a webcam, attached to a laptop, plugged into an external battery stored in the solar powered backpack. The webcam is at eye level to capture everything Laura sees. There is an interactive map, photos of the journey, and a nightly BLOG. Viewers can watch Walking Home on a TV at her ArtPrize venue or from a home computer. Laura’s artwork is about trust, community and connections. She will use social networking, to safely cross the country. In this project, Laura explores the art of walking and listening. Everyone has a story to tell. Everyone’s story is important.
