Description of work: My entry for ArtPrize 2010 is a mixed media painting of the now destroyed "Fotias Dry Cleaners" sign formerly on South Division, Grand Rapids, MI. (painting size 30"x42")
I am drawn to the industrial and commercial landscape that surrounds me. I have great nostalgia, not only for the loss of this sleek, intricate, and artistic signage, but also the way of life that these signs symbolize. And while I am nostalgic, I am also angered by our apparent lack of concern for the destruction of our city centers and our inability to save these artistic and architectural landmarks. I seek to use my technique to bring attention to the beauty of what we are so willing to forget, document the destruction, and convey to the viewer a sense of the pressing need to preserve these landmarks.
