John Hamelink

Artist bio

John was inspired to make a wooden boat after returning from the Boundary Waters in Northern, MN. While making that first boat John discovered his woodworking talents. In the past few years John has exhibited his work at several locations throughout MI and received many top awards.

John’s art is the result of events that led to what has become his passion… designing and building wooden boats. Each of his boats are his own original designs and meticulously hand crafted with care to top quality standards. They are fun, a little bit different, and each reveals its own character.

Hello, I’m John Hamelink. This will be my 3rd yr at ArtPrize, and once again my entry is one of my neat little wooden boats.
About the work
Title: Quarter Bounce

Art form: 3-D

Medium: Wood

Year created: Work not created yet

Description of work: When I signed up for ArtPrize this year I knew I was going to enter another neat little wooden boat but I had an idea to add a twist. My thought was to make a new simple type of game that could be used at large public events as a way to raise funding for selected charities.

The game works like this. Build a gigantic aquarium, and position boat floating in the tank at the start of the game. Miniature oars would be positioned on platforms surrounding the tank and used as flippers to launch coins into the boat. Anyone attending the event may play the game and enter a guess of how many coins it will take to sink the boat.

The game ends when the boat sinks from the weight of the coins. The person who guesses the number of coins to sink the boat keeps the boat and the coins would be donated to charity.

Quarter Bounce will be a different fun new way of raising funds for charity. This entry shows my idea complete with the mini oars minus the tank.
