Artist bio

My ability to paint and draw developed four years ago after three successive surgeries in four years had left me with many hours of solitary time to recuperate. The anesthesia for the last operation left me with aphasia, which makes it difficult for me to remember words, put together sentences and understand what people have told me. As my speech receded, I withdrew into the world of images.

A social worker by profession, I have had no formal training in art. I began walking two miles a day as part of my rehab after the first surgery, taking my camera and photographing the birds, flowers and butterflies that caught my fancy. I then began working with watercolor pencils, translating my photography onto the canvas. I believe that my ability to draw and paint is the gift I received in exchange for the loss of my speech. My artwork has won several awards and been shown in Celebration of the Arts, ArtPrize and Art Peers.
