Alicia is 84 yrs old! 2nd year in ArtPrize - with daughters. Displayed art & poetry at ArtWorks, Big Rapids; VSA/Legacy Trust, GR Civic Theater. Self-taught artist & poet. Due to raising 9 children, she only occasionally found time to draw sketches of movie stars (Clark Gable, Victor Mature, etc). Had her FIRST fine arts exhibition at age 80! 16 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren.

This is a Family Project - Collaborating with 3 daughters:

Ronnie Baker Woods - photographer, mixed-media artist, art teacher from Delton, MI. "Mom has always encouraged us to explore various types of creativity. As a result we draw, paint, create murals, teach, sing, write music/poetry/prose, and play instruments."
About the work
Title: Japanese Reveries

Art form: 2-D, 3-D

Medium: Drawings, photography, mixed-media

Year created: 2011

Description of work: At age 84, Alicia MAY BE the OLDEST ARTIST entered in ArtPrize!

Tribute to Japan - with 3 daughters as collaborators, to raise awareness for earthquake/tsunami victims. Presented through artwork, drawings, photography, poetry. Since the devastating earthquake and tsunami of March 11, Japan has been in the minds and hearts of people around the world. During “Kodomo No Hi” (Japanese Children’s Day), a fund-raising ART EVENT at "Kumon Battle Creek Math and Reading Center" raised almost $800 for Japan disaster relief! Students learned about Japanese tradition: “Koinobori” (CARP KITES/windsocks) symbolize STRENGTH & COURAGE. Ronnie captured action photos of children running, jumping, showing off their art creations. We weren't sure if Alicia would be creating any more art due to her worsening macular degeneration. But she really wanted to participate in ArtPrize, and created portraits, Japanese scenes/landscapes. Mary - Japanese buildings. Lisa - photos, artwork with Japanese themes.
