Kowalczyk's work propels seemingly ordinary subject matter into the extraordinary and reflects his vision of the spiritual need people have for one another. Kowalczyk was raised by his mother in a money poor but love rich single parent family where self-discipline, hard work, and compassion for others were character traits valued above all else. His compassion for others led him to a career path as a juvenile youth worker where he daily is thrust into the midst of emotional chaos and human support structures gone awry. Helping others learn how to accept help while helping themselves is a major theme of his life work as well as his art for in his words it is 'sometimes difficult to tell where one starts and another ends.'
