Ellen Stuckey

Artist bio

I am a fiber artist from northeast Indiana making mostly art quilts. I hand-dye fabric and work intuitively and improvisationally with the pieces I create. I am inspired by light, color, and shapes found in natural and man-made objects. The quilting in the art quilt adds a sculptural layer and dimension to the piece.

I generally work in series. The artwork shown here is one of 20 pieces from my Circles Series.

I have exhibited in the Fort Wayne Museum of Art, the Elkhart Midwest Museum of American Art, the Garrett Museum of Art, The Art of Contemporary Crafts: Glass, Clay, Wood, Metal, Fiber Exhibition at the University of St. Francis, Artlink Gallery (Fort Wayne), Artists in Transition II – Northeast Indiana Fiberartists, Allen County Public Library.

My husband, Don, and I live in Auburn, Indiana and we have a daughter, three sons, a daughter-in-law and one grandson. I am the director of the Butler Public Library in Butler, Indiana.
About the work
Title: Circles 4-10

Art form: 2-D

Medium: Fiber

Year created: 2010

Description of work: This art quilt is number 10 in my 4 Circles Series.
When designing and creating this piece, I chose the dark & light colors of night to contrast with the bright illumination of red. The cross hairs of the black & white fabrics help give our journey direction.
The artist-dyed fabrics are cotton and the quilted grid lines add to the structure and build a map of the journey the circles are taking.

Height: 5 feet
