Artist bio

I work professionally as a journalist and college professor. Photography for me is a way to escape academic rigor and examine a world most people take for granted, though I tackle it with as much passion as my professional career.

This year I have had the privilege of showing in five distinct regional exhibits and private showings. In February, I received a juror's recognition award from the curator at Frederick Meijer Garden.
About the work
Title: Falling drops of murder

Art form: 2-D

Medium: Digital photography

Year created: 2011

Description of work: My photography is inspired less by the documentation of people, places and things and more by the idea that the medium can be manipulating. An image taken out of its environment, framed and presented to the viewer is a completely different form than the object in its originally setting. There is no reference outside of the frame. The photograph endures because of its ability to deceive the viewer. It's not reality because the image in the frame is rarely literal. It's a slice of reality taken completely out context, not reality itself.

In this series, I've sliced up reality to present an abstract depiction of an everyday object. Each section presents its own unique image that would be lost in more literal representation.

Each image is framed separately in a 19 in x 22 black aluminum frame on a white background. The total space for the exhibit would be approximately 5 ft x 6 ft.

Height: 6 feet
Width: 5 feet
