Jacob Pierzchala

Artist bio

My name is Jacob Pierzchala. I was born and raised in West Michigan, a place I continue to consider my home despite the area's harsh winters. In 2010 I received my BA in Communications Studies from Grand Valley State University, and I've recently begun working towards an MFA in Studio Art at Bowling Green State University.

Art is a large part of my life, as a pastime, profession, and means of expression. My personal work is situated primarily in the digital realm, integrating the mediums of photography, animation, and text from a standpoint that art should engage the viewer. I understand art as the continuation of an ongoing dialogue, and in light of this, my most notable influences are the writings of C.S. Lewis, the photography of Duane Michaels, the socio-technological theory of Ray Kurzweil, and various films created by the wonderful people at Pixar Animation Studios.
About the work
Title: As War, As Dance

Art form: Film / Video

Medium: 3D Animation with Experimental Sound Design

Year created: 2011

Description of work: In their book "Metaphors We Live By", George Lakoff and Mark Johnson expand upon the metaphorical natures of communication and human understanding, suggesting that a change in metaphor can alter how we perceive any given phenomena. "As War, As Dance" is an abstraction of two possible understandings for argument, as discussed in the aforementioned text.

We live in a world of philosophical conflict, which is understandable given the limitations of human perception. However, as we enter into this labyrinth of philosophies on a daily basis, I cannot help but wonder what the world would be like if we understood debate as a waltz rather than a battle.
