Description of work: The work is a mixed media installation, acomplished beetween 2009-2010, as part of a series of work called Body Suits.
In my work I address issues of abuse, victimization, and oppression through representations of the violated, deformed human body. The tortured human body is depicted in its most grotesque form. In the work series called “Body Suits”, the human form is constructed by joining exaggerated body parts; the physical aggressive stitching over the stuffed fabric bodies, is suggestive of surgical stitches on injured bodies that are still alive but are dysfunctional. The sculptural suits transform the body into a mass of biological deformity caused by growth, disease, death and decay.
In my childhood I constructed puppet dolls out of old clothes, now I approach the same strategy in the use of found materials and fabrics. I choose fibers that reference human skin, and fiberfill that resemble flesh and body fat to create a visceral experience of the human body. |
