Description of work: I will never forget Venice: I was in love with the world, and the world was in love with me.
This piece references the days I spent in Venice, and my contemplation of romantic love and intimacy. In making this piece, I considered how the mask, so prevalent in my memories of Venice, relates to the many aspects of attraction, and how the masculine and feminine psyche perceive, in the swirl of humanity, those singular souls which excite them. What sensory perceptions do we seek to heighten? How do we become aware of those individuals that interest us? How do we hide those feelings, and yet still expose them?
The feminine mask communicates with mouth upturned, while the masculine expresses through his eyes, both leaning into the intimate pose of the breath before the kiss, when all masks are stripped away and affection is laid bare.
I invite the viewer to place themselves in this scene, and create their own associations of love from perceiving the work both visually and physic |
