Kate Lewis

Artist bio

Kate graduated from Michigan State University's Honors College with a Bachelor's degree in English and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in studio art, specializing in ceramics and sculpture. During college, Kate taught a variety of art and ceramics classes to children and adults and came to realize that teaching would be an important part of her life as an artist. After college Kate worked at the International Ceramics Research Center in Denmark, the Worcester Center for Crafts and the Harvard Ceramics program in Massachusetts.

In 2010 Kate moved to Holland, Michigan to be closer to her newborn nephew, Ryan, and to work with a friend at his ceramics studio and gallery in Saugatuck. Shortly after moving back to Michigan, Kate got involved teaching and helping to maintain the ceramics studio at the Holland Area Arts Council. In June, Kate opened her own ceramics studio and gallery in Grand Rapids, located at 645 West Fulton.
About the work
Title: All Things Emerge and Expand Out

Art form: 3-D

Medium: ceramic and mixed media

Year created:

Description of work: I create interactive installations to translate my concept of a serene, meditative moment to others by transforming the feeling of a space. I communicate the sense of enjoyment and fulfillment that drives me to practice my art by inviting others to interact with my installation pieces.

People are drawn to enter an installation space where there is the opportunity to interact. Interaction creates a living, ever-changing community art project and allows participants to get lost in the process of being creative, an uplifting human experience.

For ArtPrize I would like to begin collaborating with the venue to determine an installation space. I will construct leaf and wire forms to transform the feeling of the available space, and there will many small ceramic multiples for public interaction. These multiples can be arranged in designs on the floor and stuck to the wall with poster sticky tac to compliment and play off the leaf and wire pieces I create for the space.
