Terry Brennan

Artist bio

I did not set out to be known as an environmental artist or to create art with a social commentary but as my work progressed to sculpture my eyes opened to new materials and the association naturally occurred. I chose to use discarded pieces of our everyday life that directly impact our future while promoting the endless possibilities of creativity.
I convey my message through multiple layers, by throwing our everyday objects right back at us in a way that is skillful and captivating. With clear intention I arrange my vision with all the materials acquired. I manipulate color and shape in order to allow the viewer a glimpse into the world as I see it. While I use a variety of materials and processes in each project my methodology is consistent. Although the materials may not always be the same the similarities between the different pieces are linked by recurring formal concerns and through the subject matter.
I hope to spark conversation about the definition of art.
About the work
Title: "Dumpster Diver"

Art form: 3-D

Medium: 3 Dimensional Mixed Media Assemblage

Year created: Work not created yet

Description of work: "Dumpster Diver" will be an expanded version of my current process of 3-D mixed media assemblage. The size and arrangement can be manipulated to fit many spaces. It will consist of a scuba diver emerged in a deep sea adventure of amazing creatures. The larger the area I have the more I can play with scale and the use of re-purposed material. It will be created to engage the viewers of all ages in conversations about alternate use of common everyday objects that maybe discarded. The vision for the work is to create awareness of just a few creatures that are effected by our daily practices. Vertical or horizontal space can be used for installation as well as interior or exterior. I am looking for an area that can accomodate alot viewers at the same time to stimulate conversation. I want to make the exploration of my piece comfortable and interactive for the public. I will remain in Grands Rapids and spend time with the public onsite to discuss my process and method.
