Artist bio

Until recently my work has focused on large pencil portraits. I enjoy the simplicity of using the pencil on a white ground, while creating infinite variations of tones to construct a complicated image.

My work presently consists of landscapes in oil. I began painting using a full color palette. After completing several pieces I started using limited color choices and found that I achieved more unity while still maintaining the ability to produce a successful image. By using a limited palette I again can enjoy the simplicity of making an image with minimal materials and pushing their effect to the fullest possible extent.

I am an artist as well as a professional carpenter. I received a Masters of Art from Wayne State University. I have supported myself financially working as a licensed builder/remodeler. I now work as a carpenter two to three months during the year and as an artist the remainder of the time.

So, I ask what good is all the art in the world if there remains so much human disparity and inequality? My goal is to be the best artist possible. My hope is that our society can advance to a level of greater understanding of one another.

This painting will be completed July, 2011 depicting Lake Michigan ice on 3/3/09. This thin ice formed and broke up within 24 hours, a rare e
