W.H.A.T. Artists

Artist bio

ART is our passion! Creating, teaching, plus service to others is our process! The W.H.A.T. Group is an informally organized consortium of women from the Greater Grand Rapids area. Taking shape in 1997, our goal is to support the arts and women's well-being, in this locality and beyond. We believe that by engaging in the creative process of artmaking, art education, and art advocacy, we strengthen ourselves and our community. We value the arts as a source of creativity, health, spirituality, and joy for everyone.
About the work
Title: A Body of Work

Art form: 3-D

Medium: Relief and in the round Sculpture

Year created: Work not created yet

Description of work: Continuing in the W.H.A.T. Artists' tradition of creative sustainability, (Artprize 2009, we recycled bras, 2010 it was purses), this exhibit is inspired by a commercial discard-vacuum formed plastic torsos. These forms will be recreated into individual expressions of the feminine. The 3-dimensional pieces will reflect a variety of perspectives, styles, materials, and processes. Art media may include collage, papier mache, assemblage, painting, drawing, and fiber arts. This exhibit will include relief and in the round sculpture. The artists are reacting to societies' view of women, and the idea of placing excessive emphasis on the appearance of a woman's body, that includes a limited definition of beauty.
