About the work
Title: Catalyst

Art form: 3-D

Medium: Glass - mixed media

Year created: 2009

Description of work: Catalyst examines the impact of time on collected objects. A series of five wall-mounted panels house a collection of found automobile catalytic converter heat shields, plant roots and branches, crudely shaped attempts at solo-blown glass goblets, flame-worked glass models of water splashes, and a set of glass shapes on pedestals. Battery-powered LED lighting under each water droplet provides changing patterns of light intensity and duration. The concept of encoded time and change is carried through in the various sub-portions of Catalyst, which all undergo variations that become locked in their final appearances. Thus, the complete assemblage is simultaneously static and dynamic, exploring the concept of collecting itself as an act not of preservation, but of transformation.
