About the work
Title: The Sisterhood

Art form: 2-D

Medium: oil on canvas

Year created: 2011

Description of work: "The Sisterhood", a painting by artist Jane Petitjean, reflects the unifying thread of the powerful nurturing creative energy that is uniquely feminine. Petitjean's figures dance joyously, celebrating their diversity yet they visually meld as a continueous band of color and movement, striving for peace and harmony. Symbolism in various areas of the canvas work to convey its message. The bold and linear shapes of color blend abstractly in swirls and resolve into a whimsical representational depiction of the female form . The use of unconventional colors for the characters forces the focus away from stereotypical characteristics and into a more impartial and unbiased viewpoint. Petitjean beleives that images and the message they convey are most often remembered though the use of humor, drama and unique portrayal.
