Dana Freeman

Artist bio

My work is concept-driven, a response to my experiences and dreams. I select materials that inherently take on a metaphorical meaning for a specific work, for example eggshells in exploring cycles of life, ant farms in looking at a personal work ethic, sculpted bread as an expression of domestic art, cast sand to speak about the Aboriginal Walkabout and peat bog moss as a metaphor for the preservation of Irish Culture and dreams. The final work may take the form of sculpture, video, photography, or installation. I hope that by using materials unusually I can find a fresh expression for my experiences and ideas and create a lasting impression for the viewer.
Dana Freeman came to Grand Rapids in 1993 to teach at Aquinas College where she is an Associate Professor of Art, teaching photography, new forms and drawing.
About the work
Title: Landscape Reliquary

Art form: 3-D

Medium: honeybears, plexiglas, water, dye, organic matter

Year created: 2011

Description of work: A reliquary is, by definition, “a casket, shrine or container for keeping or exhibiting… a relic that serves as a remembrance of a person, place or thing”. The honey bear, here, is a memory of my childhood and also a container, itself, of the fleeting, natural world. The reliquary and relic it holds, often have a religious connotation and these flower relics recall, for me, St. Patrick of Ireland's claim that nature is the “first sacrament.”
This year my daughter attended the Blandford Nature Center School in Grand Rapids. We learned together about leaf and bird identification, tapping maple trees for syrup, raising chickens and making wildflower tea. “Landscape Reliquary” is an homage to these experiences. The pressed flowers and butterflies came from Blandford School, Meijer Gardens, Aquinas College where I teach, the gardens of friend Carol Jurgens and others. I wish to thank them for their contributions.
