Sheila Grant

Artist bio

Prior to my life as an artist, I was a social worker. The processing of emotions that is essential to social work led me to art. Art, in my view, is emotions coming into the world in another form for oneself and others. My medium of choice has changed over time but a consistent theme in all my work is emotional expression and movement. My creativity also has an outlet in my graphic design career spanning over 20 years in both flat media and architectural signs. While my graphic design work offers me the opportunity to take other people’s ideas and interpret them into a useable artform, my personal art allows me to engage my own ideas about the world.
About the work
Title: Fortitude

Art form: 2-D

Medium: Soft Pastel

Year created: 2009

Description of work: My piece reflects the ebbing of the human spirit. There are times when strength surfaces in joy, and other times in despair. Every emotion has variance to its energy, and time reveals these dimensions to us. The color palate and soft edges here locate these changes in our energy. My hope is that others will connect with the work by reflecting on the many situations in their lives that make-up who they are. We are all bundles of experience - passion, anger, joy, sadness, excitement married with the world we encounter.
