Artist bio

Since graduating with a B.F.A. and M.F.A. from Ohio University, I have been an Artist/Illustrator in the Air Force, a Graphic Designer, a High School Art Teacher and a Professor of Art at Calvin College, Grand Rapids, Michigan. I am now a Professor of Art, Emeritus after teaching art at Calvin College for 31 years. My art has been in many competitions and local, regional, and national exhibits over the years.

The thematic approach of all my art I call Jauntin’, which I define as “A life journey, full of creative adventures, glorifying growth and wonderful surprises.” The joyful, improvisational nature of Jazz music is the main metaphor I use to express this theme which includes expressions of life journeys, environmental discoveries, fantasy, faith and jauntin’ adventures.

In my computer drawings I try to stay honest with the medium and draw “straight” without using software program gimmicks. I always try to draw just enough to say more.
About the work
Title: The A & H Club...

Art form: 3-D

Medium: Relief Wall Sculpture-EPS Foam, Computer Imaging, Acrylic paint and mixed media

Year created: 2011

Description of work: Over the history of humanity people have always come to the aid of fellow beings in stress to offer a hand and hold them up against adversity. We see this today when calamity strikes in various areas of the world from the floods in New Orleans to the earth quakes and tsunami in Japan. People come together to help others because of strong spiritual concerns or a natural desire to aid the world community.

The image composition I have chosen to express this noble human character is of Aaron and Hur in the Old Testament holding up Moses’ tired hands in prayer during the Israelites’ battle for survival on their journey to the Promised Land against the Amalekites as told in Exodus 17:12. When Moses’ arms became tired and dropped, the Israelites would be losing the battle. As long as his companions, Aaron and Hur, held up Moses’ hands in prayer the Israelites prevailed and finally won the conflict for survival and peace.

The Title “The A & H Club...” relates to Aaron and Hur and us
