Lydia Larson

Artist bio

Lydia Larson was born in New Jersey in 1987. Growing up, in and out of a dozen different states, art making was a means of documenting the constant changes of her environment. Her love for painting soon became a need and grew into a language of its own. In May of 2009 she received her BFA from Montclair State University where she studied under Julie Heffernan, Alyssa Monks, and Peter Barnet. She received the Excellence in Painting Award of the 2009 graduating class.
Lydia has exhibited in Washington State, North Carolina, South Carolina, New Jersey, Oregon, Michigan, and most recently, Amsterdam. A scholarship recipient of Kendall College of Art and Design, Lydia moved to Grand Rapids to pursue her MFA. After graduation, she was awarded a Guest Studio Residency in Amsterdam. Lydia is currently an Adjunct Instructor at Kendall College of Art and Design.
About the work
Title: Envoy

Art form: 2-D

Medium: oil on canvas

Year created: 2010

Description of work: Envoy is a 79x99 inch oil on canvas painting. It explores a sort of metaphorical narrative about long distance communication. The glowing blue orb is "the message" that needs to be communicated. The reindeer race wildly through the snow, being driven by a mass of border collies to deliver this important message all around the world. Yet the orange extension cords and lights (symbols of connection), are tangled all around them and strewn behind them, tumbling down the snowy hill in balls. The cords are twisted and might trip up the herd, making delivery even more difficult. Long distance communication and forming meaningful messages is difficult, even in a digital age. There is still blockages, obstacles, and misunderstandings. This painting initially looks like a wild uncontrolled race with a complete lack of control. And yet, trying to convey an importance message to multitudes of people has the potential for the same results: a loss of control, difficulty, and frantic efforts.
