Artist bio

The intersection of the personal, political, historical and spiritual sparks my work. Since 9/11 I've been exploring what it means to be human in a global age. My work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including "ArtPrize 2009". Most recently it has shown at the Beverly Art Center, Chicago, IL; American Jewish University, Los Angeles, CA; "Material Afterlife", UICA, Grand Rapids, MI; the "2008 Human Rights Exhibition", South Texas College, TX, which traveled to three sites in Mexico; in 2007 at the Dallas Women's Museum, Dallas, TX; "Contemporary Women Artists Exhibition XIV", St. Louis, MO; "Windsor Biennial", Windsor, ON; "All Media Show", Contemporary Art Institute of Detroit, Detroit, MI; and a one woman show,"Shirts & Skins: Margaret Parker", at the Ann Arbor Art Center, Ann Arbor, MI. My work is in the collections of the United States Capitol, the State Department Art Bank, the Maine Maritime Academy, Chelsea Medical Center, and many private collections.
About the work
Title: C'ood: a democracy experiment

Art form: 3-D

Medium: reconstructed T-shirts, fencing, rebar, wood

Year created: Work not created yet

Description of work: "C'ood: a democracy experiment" is an outdoor participatory project based on searching for the common good. Our diverse nation doesn't share a common cultural background with a long history of what “culture” should be, like most other countries. This experiment tests whether art might help us see the beauty in our search for a common cultural identity.

Viewers enter a circular tunnel covered with free form weaving, walk around inside the weaving or move into a central open space. The tunnel of metal arches covered with fencing attached to a wood floor is woven with T-shirts donated from all over Michigan. The shirts are cut into strips then woven into the fencing. Texts from the shirts are recorded on the floor. Each of 5 entrances is woven with one color then, as the weaving merges around the tunnel, the colors intermix. The open center area is surrounded by mulitcolor weaving.

Navigating the unfamiliar space along with other viewers, one participates in this democracy experimen
