Joel VanDam
Artist bio I am a 2001 graduate of Northern Michigan University with a B.F.A. in furniture design. I attended a four week professional luthier course in 2005, apprenticed with a professional boatbuilder and have collaborated with other artists within the west Michigan area acquiring valuable experience in design and craftsmanship. As well as creating functional/non-functional works of art, I have been professionally producing high-end residential furniture for clients within the west Michigan area since the fall of 2001. Several of my functional and sculptural works of art have been accepted into numerous regional art competitions and I recently received the 'Martha Despres Memorial Award' at the 2011 regional Grand Rapids art exhibit at the G.R.A.M.

Description of work: The piece I have created is a 3' x 3' wall clock made out of Mahogany, Walnut and Wenge. Reminiscent of the mid-century modern, the design utilizes it's repetition of pattern to create a transcendent layering of depth and shadow.
