Description of work: This series uses elemental forms drawn from ancient geological landscapes to create an abstract vocabulary. The process is physically based, meditative, and uses the idea of systems and rules to generate work that refers to architectural and figurative forms. The marks build an overall sense of depth, refer to surface, and create detail. They are a physical manifestation of spiritual energy and of time.
The paintings are narrative, drawing on a wide range of sources, from personal experience, the spiritual knowledge of historic Eastern and tribal cultures, and the traditional symbolism of western European folk songs. Each painting invokes a story, refers to a universal human experience, where spiritual energy and primal knowing are held in tension by physical existence, with the longing to transcend driving a desire to find deeper truths and balance. |
