About the work
Title: Odd Kitsch

Art form: 2-D

Medium: Oil On Panel

Year created: 2010

Description of work: I've created a piece in response to last year's ArtPrize. It seems only large and in some cases, obnoxious pieces were noticed last year. This year I've decided to go very small. I've created a small, sentimental painting that aligns itself with Odd Nerdrum's definition of Kitsch. A good definition, without reading Odd Nerdrum's book "On Kitsch" can be found on Wikipedia. The definition is: The concept of Kitsch is applied to artwork that was a response to the nineteenth century art whose aesthetics convey exaggerated sentimentality and melodrama, hence, Kitsch art is closely associated with sentimental art. My piece is a sentimental portrait. It is painted with a very limited pallette. It measures 5"x7" and is in a simple black frame.
This year I am asking for a large space to show my little painting. Preferably a gallery room by itself or a large wall. The idea is to frame a small, humble, sentimental painting with a large space to create emphasis.
