Description of work: Either/Or Orion is a developing large-scale work that will include 17 mandalas set into a seascape oil painting. The work will be 70”x96” with a depth of roughly 5”. The mandalas will be cut through the painting surface (ex. images 2-3) and arranged in the pattern of the celestial constellation Orion (image 4). Each mandala will be created from multiple sheets of fine-art paper, ranging in size and depth. (ex. images 5-14). I relate this story of Orion to the paradox of tolerances. To settle on a tolerance (of a measurement for instance) we define a thing in order to move on to the next. Orion the hunter seeks to conquer the infinite. Scorpius is an insignificant representative of the marginalized. The fractional and often unconsidered does have influence on the larger scope of existence. A tolerance can be an egotistical gamble at times- statistically safe while not guaranteed. Neither Orion nor Scorpius are enemies, but rather cautions of binary thought. |
