Sara Youngman

Artist bio

I was born on 8/23/1953 in Detroit, MI. I've had an artist inside me screaming to be let out from that day, but it wasn't until 3/28/2008 that a friend, showing me how to do drypoint, woke up that artist and gave me a medium which finally meshed with my creativity and a passionate printmaker was born.

I started experimenting with chine colle after seeing it in a book,in November 2009 I had a 2-hour lesson in hard ground etching, then I picked up soft ground etching on my own. I enjoy mixing the different techniques.

I have attained a dream. I've just celebrated my 3rd anniversary as an artist and have the first art fair of my second summer of art fairs under my belt. My work has been in shows throughout West Michigan, Indiana and Texas. Can't wait to retire from my day job to become a full-time artist.

The complete list of shows my work has been in, and the art fairs I've participated in, can be found on my website.
About the work
Title: Doodler; or How a Basically Antisocial Printmaker Survived Her First Summer as an Art Fair Artist

Art form: 2-D

Medium: Pen and ink

Year created: 2010

Description of work: At every art fair last summer I doodled to while away the long, slow hours. I am framing nine of these 8-1/2" x 11" pen & ink drawings in a 30" x 36" frame. It will consist of one piece of white matboard with each drawing attached, with clear corners, evenly spaced, in a square of 3 x 3 drawings. Then framing the entire piece with a simple black frame. My goal is to present a cohesive piece which shows one artist's state-of-mind during an exhausting summer of art fairs. As a printmaker I couldn't work on copper plates, so I substituted pen & ink and white cardstock. After a summer of doodling I realized that my basic style of printmaking is doodling on copper/ stream-of-consciousness drawing. People will immediately recognize my printmaking style in these drawings.

All the images are downloaded, but the framed piece is not yet assembled.
