Description of work: This installation addresses the education crisis Michigan is facing. State budget cuts shifted millions in funding away from K-12 public education. To cover the deficit, school districts were forced to eliminate positions across the state.
The work consists of a map of Michigan created by the word "VOID" stamped in the negative space of the picture plane, each individually stamped directly onto the gallery wall.
The word VOID refers to both the absence created by the loss of a teacher and the loss educational resources.
In front of the map are stacks of books from which the text has been removed represent the loss of knowledge.
Being created directly on to the wall of the venue the work is purposefully ephemeral. |
