Description of work: I am proposing an installation that consists of approximately three hundred porcelain figurines and about a dozen crocheted doilies covering the surface of a turn of the century shelving unit, and spilling-out onto the floor of the immediate surrounding space.
The figurines are primarily sentimentalized depictions of women, children and animals.
The installation would be well suited to either a non-descript installation venue, or within an existing furnished interior. The former would emphasize its innately quotidian nature, the latter would function as a kind of absurd interruption to an otherwise orderly interior or domestic space.
What intrigues me is not the inherent value of individual components, but the collective value of the assemblage of collected objects. Even mundane objects when collected can function as objects of contemplation-- souvenirs of a place, person or event. Similarly, the arrangement becomes a kind of narrative with each additional inclusion slight |
