Anna Vlaminck

Artist bio

I was born and raised in rural Michigan, until attending the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor where I received a bachelor’s degree in fine art. I had a particular aptitude for detail, which led me to a career in medical illustration. I also began the first of my travels as a semester study abroad on the west coast of Ireland at Burren College of Art. There, with the amazing surroundings and the start to a love of hiking, I began to develop landscape and natural scenery paintings. Discovery of new places and cultures became a large part of my life and my art. I continued my travels and broadened my subject matter in paintings by living abroad; driving across the country to live and work in California; and an extended camping and hiking trip starting by the ocean, crossing multiple ranges of mountains, hiking in canyons and deserts and driving along the Pacific Coast Highway until it’s end. After many moves, much traveling and many different jobs, I have settled, for now, in Chicago.
About the work
Title: Unparalleled: Pathos

Art form: 2-D, 3-D

Medium: gouache and ink on illustration board

Year created: 2011

Description of work: Pathos is one of many paintings that are included in a body of work I have been developing over the last 6 or so years. It is the most involved that I have undertaken as of yet. The subject matter is a Grecian landscape that inspired me while on a trip in Athens. The Parthenon can be spotted between the branches of the tree on the right, beams of light come down between the clouds on the left giving an ethereal feel, and the distant mountains and view over the city are expressed in the center of the painting. However, the most intriguing part of this landscape, that inspired me to paint it, is the small tree and path off center to the right. Pathos, by the definition that I found, meant evoking emotion. Though it is normally thought of as in connection with sadness, I connected more with the idea that this landscape, and hopefully the painting of it, can evoke many different emotions, depending on the viewer.
