Description of work: Pathos is one of many paintings that are included in a body of work I have been developing over the last 6 or so years. It is the most involved that I have undertaken as of yet. The subject matter is a Grecian landscape that inspired me while on a trip in Athens. The Parthenon can be spotted between the branches of the tree on the right, beams of light come down between the clouds on the left giving an ethereal feel, and the distant mountains and view over the city are expressed in the center of the painting. However, the most intriguing part of this landscape, that inspired me to paint it, is the small tree and path off center to the right. Pathos, by the definition that I found, meant evoking emotion. Though it is normally thought of as in connection with sadness, I connected more with the idea that this landscape, and hopefully the painting of it, can evoke many different emotions, depending on the viewer. |
