Michael Flynn

Artist bio

Voters selected Michael's levitating magnetic-liquid sculpture as one of the ArtPrize Top 50 finishers in 2009. He is back this year with another interactive spectacle that transcends the boundary between art and science.
A life-long Michigander, Michael was born in the sheltered basement of Blodgett Hospital during the tornado that struck Grand Rapids in 1967. With degrees in Physics and Science Education from EMU, he is now a lecturer at the University of Michigan's School of Art & Design. He designs unique interactive works of public art and creates robust, hands-on exhibitions for children's museums.
About the work
Title: Singing Bowl

Art form: 3-D, Sound, Internet / Interactive

Medium: Hands-on interactive musical sculpture

Year created: 2010

Description of work: The Singing Bowl uses no electricity or amplifiers to play back recorded voice and music; but cooperation is required! Users gently rock the entire bowl, pumping up the speed of an orbiting ball until it bumps over a surface that is textured with recorded sound. Coordination and rhythm are rewarded with a stunning aural enigma, and by the natural sense of community arising from cooperative play.
