Artist bio Blake Heminger has developed his style of photography over the past two decades. After a long career in medicine, Blake turned to photography, concentrating on flowers as his subject and digital as his medium. He believes that flowers are open for unique interpretations, a perfect match for his contemporary style photography - a fusion of nature and photography. His floral abstracts are so unique that you can walk into any gallery and identify his work immediately. Blake’s photography and digital art have been influenced by Henri Matisse’s mastery of the expressive language of colour; Georgia O’Keefe’s abstract imagery, Marc Chagall’s mixture and style of modern art, and by Ansel Adams’ clarity and depth of his photographs. The alluring beauty, the bright colors, the intriguing patterns, and the contemporary twist to his images, have earned Blake accolades from Kodak, Nikon, the San Mateo Arts Commission as well as the Arts Council of Foster City.

Description of work: My 2011 Artprize entry consists of 5 works of art. Each piece is layering of several enriched photographs that have been digitally painted using “oil painting techniques”. To create the stained glass effect, the photographs are divided into many unique sections and separated from the original image. Each section, each petal, and each leaf are digitally etched, in ebony, to “mirror” a lead enclosure. Then, the sections are carefully placed back into the original image A completed piece has anywhere from 100 to 300 layers and can take up to 30 hours to complete. The soothing music, beautiful benches, and a relaxing atmosphere help bring to life “Sanctuaire Floral”.
