Artist statement: We are a group of 13 artists (a significant number in many contexts). We work in a range of media. We have decided to collaborate for Artprize in order to make a bolder, larger statement than we could make separately.

Our work is a group of portraits. The concept is to consider the exterior and interior workings of producing a portrait as an opportunity for real human contact. Each portrait is of someone with whom the creator has a complex, less-than-perfect relationship.

Each artist will create a portrait on the outside of an 18X24" panel box. Using the tools of his or her own medium, he'll transform the flat exterior into the representation of the subject, and the concave backside into the conception of the internal dynamics of that portrait (the relationship between the subject and the artist. The thirteen finished pieces will be suspended in a circle from a ceiling, so that viewers can move both around the outside and inside of the group installation.
